Allen Auditorium Equipment Upgrade and Ehancement

University Libraries

Requested:

$51,175

Status:

Funded

Awarded:

$51,175

Abstract

This proposal is for the upgrade of the computer, digital projection, sound system and peripherals installed in the Allen Auditorium in the Allen Library, and the addition of Web video-conferencing and recording equipment.

Evans School Collaborative Workspace

Evans School of Public Policy & Governance

Requested:

$6,825

Status:

Funded

Awarded:

$6,825

Abstract

We propose to set up a new collaborative workspace for the expanding Evans School student body. This involves 5 collaborative workspaces for approximately 2-5 students each. Funding for each workspace is requested for multi-client displays with wired and wireless student device connectivity. We are requesting a total of $6,825 in funding.

Remote Computing for Social Sciences students & beyond

Center for Studies in Demography and Ecology

Requested:

$53,639

Status:

Funded

Awarded:

$53,639

Abstract

Renew software licenses critical to student research projects & storage replacement. CSDE's ~ large shared project storage space is now running on spinning disk approaching 6 years old. The drive failure rate is increasing and it is time to move to a new storage platform for hosting this important student collaboration filesystem. CSDE has maximized the lifetime of this resource but it is time to replace it.

Climate Change Outreach with Infrared Vision

Department of Atmospheric Sciences

Requested:

$3,940

Status:

Funded

Awarded:

$3,940

Abstract

We propose to use thermal imaging cameras to create opportunities for students to present hands-on demonstrations of the greenhouse effect and to visualize the radiative properties of the atmosphere to public audiences. This uses cutting-edge, low-cost infrared cameras that attach to tablets; additionally the tablets alone will be useful for student poster presentations at professional conferences and other outreach activities.

Gould Hall Design Computing Lab Refresh

College of Built Environments

Requested:

$48,865

Status:

Funded

Awarded:

$48,865

Abstract

The Digital Commons computing lab in Gould Hall provides all UW students with access to discipline specific design software used in Architecture, Engineering, Construction, and related professions. The STF has supported the DC since its opening in 2005 by funding replacements of obsolete hardware. This proposal seeks STF support to replace PCs in this space that will be four years old this summer, and are becoming unable to provide students with a good experience using this complex software.

Granta Design - Materials Selection Software

Materials Science and Engineering

Requested:

$53,920

Status:

Funded

Awarded:

$53,920

Abstract

The Granta CES Material Selector is a database-integrated software enabling smart and efficient selection of materials for various applications and projects. Students from all fields will be able to compare all known materials based on properties such as price and tensile strength.

Digital Archaeology Research Lab Refresh

Department of Anthropology

Requested:

$80,445

Status:

Funded

Awarded:

$80,445

Abstract

Recently, the Denny Hall renovation project has allowed the Digital Archaeology Research Lab to expand in size and renew its infrastructure with the potential to provide an improved high-end computing environment dedicated to more undergraduate and graduate research in Archaeology. However, the Lab is finding it increasingly difficult, to meet students’ computing necessities with 7-10 year-old computers. It is therefore essential for the lab computers to be upgraded to meet our research demands.

Retrofit GPU Workstations

Computer Science and Engineering

Requested:

$5,430

Status:

Funded

Awarded:

$5,430

Abstract

CSE proposes to retrofit 6 reclaimed Dell workstations with new GPU cards and SSDs. We kindly ask for funding for six NVidia GTX 980 cards (4GB, 2048 CUDA cores) and six 1TB SSDs to create six High-performance GPU systems. We request these to satisfy numerous requests from our ugrad major students for access to these unique and powerful computing resources. These systems would be deployed in the CSE General Computer Laboratories and would be available for use by all CSE students.

Mathematica for student personal computers, UAC Tri Campus

College of Engineering

Requested:

$10,950

Status:

Funded

Awarded:

$10,950

Abstract

The proposal is a request to license Mathematica software for student personal computers, as well as allow students to run Mathematica remotely from the comfort of their own home, on UW remote desktop clusters. This is a one year lease. STF has licensed Mathematica in this manner the past 4 years. Since the last renewal of the license in June 2016, 1985 students have requested Mathematica for their personal computers. Many others run Mathematica remotely on UW remote desktop clusters.

Wearable Tech in Rec: Measuring Performance and Enhancing Instruction

Student Recreation

Requested:

$62,349

Status:

Funded

Awarded:

$62,349

Abstract

Wearable tech to keep track of fitness levels is more popular than ever. By pairing this tech (heart rate monitors) with updated indoor cycling bikes and knowledgeable Fitness Instructors, students are able to measure performance, modify their workout, receive instant feedback, track their progress, and stay motivated. Students’ indoor cycling experience with this technology will positively impact their ability to achieve and maintain an active and healthy lifestyle beyond their time at UW.
