An Enhanced Cooperative Vote Tracking Environment (ecVOTE) in the GPSS and ASUW senate

Student Government

Requested:

$10,545

Status:

Funded

Awarded:

$10,545

Abstract

In order to increase efficiency and transparency, ASUW transitioned to electronic voting in 2010, with STF assistance in 2010 and 2012. Custom software currently allows for voting results to be displayed in real-time and easily archived. This software is reaching the limits of its functionality, and modifications to it are not possible. Given the success of this electronic voting system, we request funds for the creation of new sustainable software that will be utilized by both ASUW and GPSS.

Tool Lending Library

CoMotion

Requested:

$8,054

Status:

Funded

Awarded:

$8,054

Abstract

We are proposing to offer a student run tool library open to all UW Seattle students, staff, and faculty, housed at the CoMotion MakerSpace. This library would contain a specific set of tools which users could check out for use outside of the space, check out for use within the space, and/or receive information on the proper usage of the tools available. These tools will be available for class or personal projects and would be a huge asset to the UW community by democratizing tool access.

Update poster printing services for students at CSSCR

Center for Social Science Computation and Research

Requested:

$2,733

Status:

Funded

Awarded:

$2,733

Abstract

CSSCR seeks funds to replace a 22 year old wide-format (poster) printer. The printer is used nearly exclusively for printing academic posters for graduate and undergraduate students in the social sciences, for scientific conferences (e.g. the undergraduate research fair) as well as for courses that require (or permit) a final project in the form of a poster. We therefore submit a request to fund the purchase of a new HP DesignJet T520 plotter to continue providing this service to students.

DXARTS DIWire

Digital Arts and Experimental Media (DXARTS)

Requested:

$5,112

Status:

Funded

Awarded:

$5,112

Abstract

This proposal is for a computer controlled wire bending machine. It fills a vital gap in the creation of larger scale complex geometries made possible by CAD/CAM, CNC machines and 3d printing. The device allows students to easily turn 2d curves into strong and light-weight 3d objects. The process is inexpensive, fast and complements work produced in any of our campus shops, labs or makerspaces.

Enhancing the learning environment for the digital drawing in School of Art.

School of Art, Art History, and Design

Requested:

$25,040

Status:

Funded

Awarded:

$25,040

Abstract

The division of Design in School of Art + Art History + Design is proposing the enhancement of equipment related in Digital drawing production. Especially for students who strive to learn the advanced level of the visual technique, it will be directly beneficial to have more experiences of digital technology that triggers them to meet the current industry standards.

Open Computer Lab Upgrade

Language Learning Center

Requested:

$34,912

Status:

Funded

Awarded:

$34,912

Abstract

This proposal is for replacing outdated Dell computers in the open computer lab of the Language Learning Center. Currently it is located in Condon Hall, but it will be relocated to Denny Hall after the renovation process will be completed in early fall of 2016. The current lab is open to students and used by language and ESL instructors. It is equipped with 5+ year old Dell PCs that are out of warranty, slow, and begin to fail. This proposal requests funds to purchase 32 new Dell computers.

High Performance GPU Computing Server

Department of Applied Mathematics

Requested:

$19,180

Status:

Funded

Awarded:

$19,180

Abstract

This proposal requests funds to purchase a computer with high performance Graphics Processing Units (GPUs) for the Applied Mathematics Computing Lab in Lewis 117. The addition would be a crucial investment allowing students to utilize cutting-edge GPU computing in tackling increasingly challenging computational problems in diverse fields, including data science, neuroscience, and geophysics. This follows up a previously successful proposal from 2012.

Biology Study Area Replacements

Department of Biology

Requested:

$11,934

Status:

Funded

Awarded:

$11,934

Abstract

The Biology Study Area (BSA) has served students as a computer lab and study area for 21 years. This proposal requests funds to upgrade the remaining 7 year old computers (the first half was funded by an STF grant last year) with current hardware.

Field Equipment for Canopy Research and Education

School of Environmental and Forest Sciences

Requested:

$30,246

Status:

Funded

Awarded:

$30,246

Abstract

The graduate students belonging to the Ecosystem Conservation and Soil Ecology Lab in the School of Environmental and Forest Sciences have prepared this proposal to request funding for field equipment necessary to access the forest canopies, and ruggedized equipment that will complement sampling and education in the field. We are asking for four sets of climbing gear, water and soil sampling kits, and rugged technology that will allow for safe and productive off-grid research.

Equipment for School of Art Computing Lab

School of Art, Art History, and Design

Requested:

$5,999

Status:

Funded

Awarded:

$5,999

Abstract

The School of Art + Art History + Design is seeking funding for two items to be housed in our main computer lab - a 27in wide vinyl cutter for graphics display, signage, and packaging applications and high-end portable audio recorders for various uses in sound recording and mixing. One final item is to increase ram within our four Apple MacPro computers.
