Remote Computing for Social Science

Center for Studies in Demography and Ecology

Requested:

$190,145

Status:

Partially Funded

Awarded:

$188,195

Abstract

Our popular interdisciplinary remote-access research computing service continues to evolve, mature, and grow. As with every CSDE STF proposal we have submitted over the past 10+ years, we will leverage previously funded infrastructure, equipment, and software licensing paid for by Arts and Sciences, CSDE, and the STF. Our broad-base computing platform supports student research, often in collaboration with faculty researchers and interdisciplinary teams.

DLP Digital Projector for DXARTS, Dance and Music

Department of Dance

Requested:

$116,450

Status:

Partially Funded

Awarded:

$35,666

Abstract

The Dance Program requests funding for two Digital Projectors for student use. Current collaborative research across disciplines has been repeatedly halted or involved making concessions that lessen the impact of the final product. Also, students in dance are more adept at making “screen dances.” They find our projectors inadequate. This high quality tool will allow for investigation of new performance technologies and foster collaboration.

HUB Ballroom projector

The HUB

Requested:

$82,454

Status:

Partially Funded

Awarded:

$72,754

Abstract

This proposal is for the purchase and installation of a short throw projection system for use in the South Ballroom on the South wall. This projection system will allow the HUB to support the demands of student programming and provide additional creative options for student led programming.

High Performance Computing Resources for UW Students

UW-IT Research Computing

Requested:

$630,000

Status:

Partially Funded

Awarded:

$422,100

Abstract

Prior to April 2015, UW students lacked open access to high performance computing (HPC) resources. This past spring, STF agreed to partially fund a request for $1,000,000 to invest in HPC resources and ensure UW’s future as a leader in supercomputing. To accommodate the HPC Club's rapidly expanding membership and equip UW students with the computational resources they need, we ask for the remaining $630,000 to purchase more computing power on Hyak.

Information School VR, Mobile Devices and Displays

Information School

Requested:

$43,836

Status:

Partially Funded

Awarded:

$18,586

Abstract

This proposal seeks funding for three initiatives including: * Providing students with "frontier" access to the latest virtual reality hardware * Refresh of previously funded mobile devices (phones and tablets) for student checkout * Additional monitors for an existing computer lab

Student Veteran Life Computer Lab

Student Veteran Life

Requested:

$13,976

Status:

Partially Funded

Awarded:

$12,031

Abstract

One of the key findings of the 2014 UW Assessment of veteran services was that a multi-use community center was key to the long-term success of student veterans at UW. This center should be designed to satisfy the academic, professional, and community needs of our military veterans. To answer those aforementioned needs, we are asking for funding for 6 desktop units, 2 laptops, 1 printer, and 1 router, totaling $13,975.

Modular Instrumentation Platform for UWashington Formula Motorsports

Department of Mechanical Engineering

Requested:

$54,161

Status:

Partially Funded

Awarded:

$38,663

Abstract

An important component to the Mechanical Engineering curriculum are the ME 495/498/499 courses that tie design, analysis, and justification of an engineering system. One such design project is the Formula SAE open cockpit race car. We are hoping to get a data acquisition solution that would greatly aid us in many of our future endeavors in engineering both combustion and electric cars.

Centralized File Server for Astronomy Students

Department of Aerospace and Astronautics

Requested:

$15,241

Status:

Partially Funded

Awarded:

$12,713

Abstract

We request funds to buy a large (96 TB) shared file storage server for students in the astronomy department. Current storage solutions for our students only provide 7 TB to share, yet in the Big Data world of astronomy one night of telescope data already exceeds 100 GB. Our academic and research productivity is being held back by a lack of storage space; a large remote file storage server will allow UW Astronomy to stay competitive, productive, and encourage collaboration in the era of Big Data.

CoMotion Expanding Impact Proposal

CoMotion

Requested:

$88,174

Status:

Partially Funded

Awarded:

$62,724

Abstract

CoMotion at the University of Washington is a magnet for passionate innovators and forward thinkers who create the best solutions to do more good in the world. We are requesting funds for equipment in Virtual Reality (VR), Augmented Reality (AR) and cameras to capture 360 videos.
