Career and Internship Center
About the Career and Internship Center
The University of Washington Career and Internship Center (CIC) equips Huskies to integrate their holistic UW experience and create boundless futures. They provide a range of career and coaching services from resume reviews and interview prep to career fairs and workshops to help students connect with industries and employers and develop specialized skills to supplement their degree.
Why LinkedIn Learning
To better serve students and increase the resources available, the CIC looked to provide free access to LinkedIn Learning for students across all three UW campuses. LinkedIn Learning is an online educational platform with an expansive library of expert-led courses which students can use to learn new skills and subjects and build out their resumes. LinkedIn Learning provides dynamic and up-to-date courses and responds to current job trends across a variety of industries and specialties. Students can use LinkedIn Learning to try out new subjects and discover their interests or major.
How STF Helped
Knowing that the Student Technology Fee is collected to support students, in Winter 2020, the CIC approached the STF with a proposal to fund LinkedIn Learning for three years. Proposals like the CIC’s LinkedIn Learning are unique because they impact all three campuses: Seattle, Bothell, and Tacoma. As such, the STF Committees at each campus met to review and vote on the proposal, approving it for the full amount: $437,278, with the stipulation that alumni have access to LinkedIn Learning after they graduate.
The Impact
Briana Randall, executive director of the CIC, reported that over 21,000 students have activated and used LinkedIn Learning since the project was funded. For Fall 2022 alone, more than 3,600 courses were watched by students. Randall also mentioned that LinkedIn Learning is now integrated with Canvas, allowing instructors to find and make available relevant courses that supplement the curriculum.

What Faculty Say
Did your students seem to learn from the LiL content?
“Yes. Many students, particularly undergraduates, would not gravitate to this tool on their own. Once introduced to LiL I think they see the value and should be able to identify how LiL could assist with some of their other classes and topical learning.”
“Yes. I had many students start to watch more of the material because they were very interested in the topics brought up in the assigned video. Typically, this happened when I assigned a video that was in a larger course structure on LiL, so my students played the other videos in the course.”
“I thought the lesson topics complemented my course very well and my students appreciated the opportunity to learn perspectives from the professional fields.”

Would you recommend that other faculty use LiL in their courses?
“Yes. I think it’s a great toolbox item to provide information directly from professionals in the field. The content is presented with clarity and enthusiasm in short units of digestible information. The presenters are skilled and experienced.”
“Yes! It’s a great way to add more content to the course in short succinct bursts. Also, it helps reinforce material when students hear it from multiple sources and perspectives.”
“Yes. I embedded these lessons in my Canvas course and students were able to access the lessons seamlessly.”
